The first sparks of No Artificial Flavors came in 2006 when Evan Ames met Hydra. He asked him to throw some artwork up at a show being thrown by a mutual friend of theirs. Although skeptical of this goofy toy looking motherfucker, Hydra agreed to do the show and sold over 10 pieces of artwork in one night. Since then the two collaborated on more shows and projects gaining a cult following in the LA art scene. Hydra’s girlfriend, Mags; who would tag along at the shows was known for always carrying a camera and snapping photos. After sneaking a peek at her computer one night and seeing the awesome photos she was taking, she was asked to join the crew as their official photographer and box wine drinker. Finally, Lauren came in to the crew after meeting Evan at one of the NAF events and showing her portfolio. After many bottles of red wine and vodka she joined the crew and has been the go to for the team and unofficial cheerleader for our causes with her brash internet marketing style.
As a crew we collaborate with event coordinators, record labels, galleries, and other people and events to setup special installations, curate galleries, and provide design and art for various projects. As well we have our own in house graphic design firm for bands and labels as well as special events and promotions.
Our label is love and we tolerate no bullshit. We pick our projects based on how we feel about them, not about the net gross profit (although it is nice when blank checks are written for us to go crazy). If we work with someone it’s because we see something in their vision that matches ours. If we choose not to work with them, it’s not because we are elistist pricks (well, Evan is…), it’s because we don’t share the vision that the other party has. We would rather lose the sale than put out a half ass weak product.
